The short version
- Snoki is built to meet the Revised Section 508 Standards. We test against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which includes everything Section 508 asks for.
- Every page is checked automatically at phone, tablet and desktop sizes before it ships, and by hand.
- A few things still fall short. They're listed below, with what we're doing about them.
- If something doesn't work for you, tell us.
The standard we follow
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act sets accessibility rules for technology in the United States. Its Revised 508 Standards include the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 at Level A and AA. We test against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, a newer version that includes all of WCAG 2.0 and adds rules for things like touch target size, keeping keyboard focus in view, and alternatives to dragging.
This covers everything Snoki builds: this website now, and later the Snoki apps, emails and help pages.
What works today
- Keyboard: everything works with a keyboard alone, and the control you're on always shows an outline. A “Skip to main content” link comes first on every page.
- Screen readers: pages use headings, landmarks, lists and labels. Every form field has a visible label, form errors are described in text, and results are read out.
- Reading: text meets WCAG color contrast on Snoki's dark design, and nothing is shown by color alone.
- Zoom and small screens: pages work at 200% zoom and fit a screen 320 pixels wide (the same as 400% zoom) without scrolling sideways.
- Touch: buttons and links are at least 44 by 44 pixels on phones and tablets.
- Motion: the moving picture on the home page has a Pause button, and it starts paused when your device is set to reduce motion. Nothing on Snoki flashes.
- High contrast: focus outlines stay visible in Windows high contrast mode.
How we test
- Before a change ships, every page is checked with axe-core, an automated tester, against the WCAG 2.2 A and AA rules at five widths: 375, 768, 1024, 1280 and 1920 pixels.
- The same check fails a page that scrolls sideways at 320 pixels (400% zoom) or 640 pixels (200% zoom), has a touch target under 44 pixels, or has a control without a visible focus outline.
- More checks cover keyboard focus hidden behind the header, wider text spacing, larger text, reduced motion, high contrast mode, and the forms' error messages.
- We review the screenshots by eye, and what a screen reader gets from each page (its accessibility tree).
What still falls short
- Screen reader testing. So far we've checked each page's structure and labels with tools, not yet with people who use screen readers, voice control or switch access every day. We'll do that with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack before the beta opens, and fix what we find.
- Browsers. Our automated checks run in Chrome. We haven't yet repeated them in Firefox and Safari.
- The moving picture on the home page. It's an illustration: dots that form a shape for each step. The step buttons and the caption under it say the same thing in words, and screen readers get a short description of the current step. It moves on its own until you press Pause, or stays still if your device is set to reduce motion. Dragging turns it; from a keyboard, use the turn buttons. In Windows high contrast mode the dots keep their own colors.
- Sources on other websites. Snoki links to filings and data on sites we don't run, such as SEC EDGAR and government agencies. Some of those documents, like older filings and PDF tables, can be hard to use with assistive technology. If you can't read a source we link to, tell us and we'll try to help.
- Beta. Snoki changes often while it's in beta. Every change goes through the checks above, but if something slips through, please let us know.
Report a problem or ask for another format
If anything on Snoki is hard to use, or you need information in a different format, use the contact form and choose “A question, correction or feedback”. It helps to tell us:
- the page address,
- what you were trying to do and what happened, and
- if you're comfortable sharing it, the device, browser and any assistive technology you use.
We'll reply by email.
Accessibility Conformance Report
We're preparing an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) that shows how Snoki meets each Section 508 and WCAG requirement, using the industry-standard VPAT® 2.5 Rev 508 template. We'll publish it on this page.
