CPI-U and CPI-W

Also called CPI-U, CPI-W.

The two main CPI populations: all urban consumers (CPI-U) and urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W).

The CPI-U covers more than 90 percent of the U.S. population, including workers, the self-employed, the unemployed and retirees. The CPI-W covers about 30 percent: the households within that group that meet income and employment tests for wage earners and clerical workers. Source 1
